Colleges and Universities

In McDowell County, learning doesn’t stop once you’ve earned your high school diploma! Check out these nearby colleges and universities to continue your education.

Bluefield State College: In addition to the main Mercer County campus, McDowell County residents can attend classes offered by Bluefield State College’s “Distance Learning” program in Welch.

Bluefield College: Bluefield College is a four-year, Christian liberal arts school located in Bluefield, Virginia, on the edge of the West Virginia border.

Concord University: Concord University is located in Athens, West Virginia and holds programmatic accreditations with NationalCouncil for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) and the Council on Social Work Education.

Mountain State University: While Mountain State University’s main campus is located in Beckley, West Virginia, the University offers a range of independent study courses and online courses that allow McDowell County residents the comfort and convenience of learning from home.

Marshall University: Marshall University’s main campus is located in Huntington, West Virginia; however, McDowell County residents have quicker access to the University’s online course programs.
